A dancer her whole life, Schuyler had recently graduated from Yale and was traveling the world when one trip to Colombia would change her life forever!
In 2016, Schuyler (pronounced Skylar) and her friends went white water rafting and they stopped to swim in a grotto. They took off our helmets while swimming and then ascended up a cliff single file to jump off a ledge. The person in front of Schuyler accidentally dislodged a boulder, knocking her off the cliff, hitting her head and causing her traumatic brain injury.
After the accident, Schuyler’s friends set up a special needs trust for her and helped her find NextStep Orlando! She now travels to us once a month for a week at a time for Activity- Based Therapy. She credits her training here and her exercises our trainers give her to do at home for helping her to her “first solo steps in 6 years” last month!
Schuyler’s goals are to walk again and to live as independently as possible. She hopes to just lead a “normal life”. One of her favorite quotes is from her grandma, ‘inch by inch is a cinch but yard by yard is hard.’ To Schuyler, this means that even though the progress seems small each step is a step forward!
The progress Schuyler sees in herself, no matter how so small, motivates her to keep pushing! The Schuy is the limit!
