Our Services

Activity Based Therapy

Activity based therapy (ABT) is performed by NeuroRecovery Network (NRN) trained specialists and promotes recovery of neuromuscular function and health through three standardized and evidence-based intervention programs developed by the NRN.

ABT consists of three programs:

  • Locomotor Training

  • NeuroMuscular Electrical Stimulation

  • Guided Exercise

Locomotor Training

Locomotor Training is a rehabilitation strategy that allows individuals with certain kinds of spinal cord injuries to repetitively practice standing and stepping using body weight support and a treadmill with manual facilitation from therapists and technicians.

NeuroMuscular Electrical Stimulation

NeuroMuscular Electrical Stimulation (NMES) provides activation below the level of spinal cord injury to retrain movement through sensory input and external stimulation.

High pulse width electrical simulation administered via electrode pads placed over specific muscle groups below injury or affected by paralysis in order to facilitate
and retrain coordinated movements.

Guided Exercise

Exercise sessions focused on recovery of the neuromuscular system below the level of injury or areas affected by paralysis. Focus is placed on movements related to daily motor tasks, including trunk control and mobility, reaching and grasping, and/or standing and walking.

Adaptive Fitness

Individualized and group fitness sessions focusing on improving strength, endurance, and overall health

NextStep Atlanta offers One on One Adaptive Fitness for individuals with physical disabilities. $75 an hour.

Neuro Physical Therapy

NextStep Atlanta has two Neuro Doctor of Physical Therapy on staff who are passionate about Activity Based Therapy and assist the program with their expertise as well as consulting with clients on navigating the continuum of care post neurological injury. Outside of general consultation our DPT are treating clients in need of traditional PT services and
can assist with specific needs.

Functional Electrical Stimulation

Functional electrical stimulation (FES) applies small electrical pulses to paralyzed muscles to restore or improve their function. (FES) is used to stimulate peripheral nerves, the "lower motor neurons" that connect the spinal cord to your muscles.  FES can be utilized for muscle re-education, functional substitution, spasticity management or general health and wellness benefits.

NextStep’s FES bikes are specially designed ergonomic bicycles which a person can use from their wheelchair, using electrical stimulation through electrodes to cycle with and without motor support. These bikes can be used for either arm cycling or leg cycling. The benefits of FES cycling are numerous—from aerobic conditioning to increased circulation, spasticity management and muscle flexibility.
