Recently, our client Sabrina reached a Huge Milestone… standing unassisted! Sabrina is a C4/5 quadriplegic, paralyzed in a car accident less than 2 years ago. She began coming to NextStep in March of 2019.
This is what she had to say about her achievement:
“When I first was told that I had a spinal cord injury, (22 months ago) I knew it was going to be an uphill battle. I just didn’t realize how steep the hill was.
When I say I had to learn everything all over again, I mean EVERYTHING. Including how to swallow. (Yes, you read that right.)
Ever since my accident, all of my nutrition has been through a feeding tube. Water and food. It took me a while just to learn how to manage the spit in my mouth. After months and months of speech therapy, I’ve (finally) recently started being able to eat soft, easy to swallow foods.
When I started my journey at NextStep Orlando, one of the first things I said was “I want to walk again.” (As if they’d never heard that one before.) But anyone who knows me knows how headstrong I am. From the beginning, my Activity-Based Trainer Ryan said “Once you have a good solid stand, we can build on that to get you walking again.”
So today when what once felt impossible finally happened, you can imagine how good it felt.
Despite the issues I’ve been facing with my nutrition, this bizarre pandemic throwing off my therapy schedule... I finally caught a glimpse of the top of the hill. The journey is far from over but the views are definitely worth it!”
